Black Friday not as busy this year in Johnstown

By Maria Miller

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. —

Shopping was the main event all over the region for Black Friday, but the Johnstown area saw a rather calm atmosphere. Shoppers claim it wasn't as busy of a morning as in years past.

"We think that Thursday for Thanksgiving was busier than today," said Connie Petak.

"We walked into Toys R Us and there was barely anyone [inside]," said Mary Panasci. "There weren't many people there and the shelves were all full."

The reason for smaller crowds could be because Black Friday came earlier this year. In Johnstown, Best Buy was open at midnight, Walmart started their specials at 10 p.m., and that's when shoppers say the stores were packed.

"I went to Walmart around 9:30 and I got what I came for, but it was really busy," said Petak. "The line went clear to the back of the store."

With stores now opening Thanksgiving night, hundreds of people took advantage of not waking up at the crack of dawn, not being required to stand outside in the cold. But that's also when things were the craziest.

"People were jumping over people. Everybody was pushing and I almost got [trampled}," said Jeannine Olivares. "It was terrible."

Richland police told 6 News it was just a normal Black Friday with the typical squabbles. They said they were called throughout the night to assist some individuals out of stores but they didn't make any arrests.
