Blair, Cambria airports close to switching carriers

By Scott MacFarlane and  WJAC Web Staff

Next week will be a pivotal week for the Cambria and Blair County airports.  Sources tell our Scott MacFarlane that's when Silver Airways will decide whether to go forward with plans to take over service of the two airports and replace current carrier Colgan Air.

Barring a last minute setback, Silver Airways is poised to take over service at both Johnstown and Altoona-Blair County airports.

Some things would likely remain the same.  6 News obtained a copy of a proposed sample schedule Silver Airways submitted to the U.S. Transportation Department.  It shows three flights a day, out of each airport and three daily flights into each airport.  It shows the flights only connect with Washington-Dulles airport.

Silver Airways says it's scrapped an idea that first surfaced two years ago, to add flights to Cleveland too.

An airline executive says even though Colgan Air wants out, Silver very much wants in.

6 News was told current employees at the two airports wouldn't be guaranteed a job, but would be given “preference during job interviews” if Silver takes over.

The same aircraft would be used.

Blair County's airport director filed a letter with federal regulators supporting Silver's bid, saying it “will allow for the continued economic growth and development in our region."

Silver Airways is the only carrier bidding to take over from Colgan.

A Silver Airways executive says the deal isn’t finalized with United Airlines with whom it must partner to handle local reservations and gate space at Washington-Dulles.  The deal could be done in a matter of days.
