Blair Co. family: No closure after accused arsonist found hanged in jail

By Rich Wisniewski and  WJAC Web Staff

BLAIR COUNTY, Pa. —

While a Blair County family who lost their toddler son in a fire in November still grieves, on Friday the man accused of setting the blaze was found dead by apparent suicide in his prison cell.

Sunday, the family spoke to 6 News about Aaron Dishong, the man accused of the arson that took the life of 3-year-old Darrel Etchison Jr.

Darrel Etchison Sr., the child's father, said, "I feel like (Dishong) robbed me twice. He took my boy from me and now he took his own life. He didn't suffer nearly half as much as my son did."

The child's mother, Brandy Etchison, who was injured in the blaze and escaped with the family's young daughter, said, "I was disappointed because (Dishong) is not suffering. He didn't get the chance to suffer and we didn't get the justice that we needed."

The couple said they were shocked when they received word that the man who was charged with the death of their son, Darrel Jr., took his own life in his Blair County Prison cell.

"I was shocked that he was able to do it because he was on suicide watch," Brandy Etchison said.

Darrel Etchison said the family was not seeking the death penalty for Dishong.

"We just wanted him put in prison so he couldn't hurt nobody else," he said.

They said knowing Dishong is dead doesn't necessarily bring closure to the family.

"Because I couldn't get the justice I or my son deserved, I don't think it will ever be like a full closure. I don't think I'll ever be completely happy or satisfied with him taking his own life," Brandy said.

Darrel added, "God is handling him now. He's dealing with the hell fires now, which is even more painful, but I wanted him to go through hell on earth."

On Friday, Dishong's family told 6 News that Dishong was not a monster and that their prayers are with the Etchisons.

"To (Dishong's) mother, I'm sorry she had to bury her son. But she doesn't know what I was going through because he was grown," Darrel said.

A donation account for Brandy and Darrel Etchison and their family remains set up at the M&T Bank branch in Pleasant Valley. The family thanks all who have donated so far.
