Blair County Commissioners Calling For Major Budget Cuts

Blair County —

Blair County Commissioners are looking at making cuts and increasing taxes to balance the budget for the upcoming year. At their regular meeting Tuesday, commissioners called on those in charge of county deparments to cut their budgets by 16 1/2 percent.

However, many of the department heads say they are already working with lean budgets and any cutbacks will elimate jobs and impact services.

"We've already cut it back to the bare minimum when we were asked to do the zero budgeting. By taking the cut, it would actually eliminate most of my supplies, my maintenance, just my general office," said Carol Newman, Blair County's Prothonotary Clerk of Courts.

Still, commissioners say the cuts must be made to help balance the county's $5 million budget deficit. They say the deficit has grown because there hasn't been a tax increase in the last 5 years. Commissioners have given department heads until Wednesday to make the cuts.
