Blair County Courthouse Applying For Security Grants

Blair County Courthouse officials are looking to beef up security cameras they claim are outdated.

Finance Director Tim Brown told WJACTV.com they're hoping the $86,000 grant will come from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

The money is supposed to come through the U.S. Department of Justice.

About $55,000 will convert the surveillance cameras at the courthouse from analog to digital. It would also add 27 more cameras to monitor the surrounding area.

The other portion of the money would go to sheriff's deputies.

Right now the deputies pay for their own guns and the department provides ammunition.

The funding would allow all deputies to have the same guns so that if they are in a firefight, they can exchange weapons.

The money would also be used to buy vests.

The commissioners are scheduled to vote on the grant May 5.

The application is due May 18.
