Blair County Drug Court Receives NO Federal Funding

Efforts to help curb the growing drug problem in West Central Pennsylvania got a major blow today. Now, officials are shocked and looking for answers.

When Blair County officials found out funding was cut for their Drug Court, they were surprised. One group told Channel 6 News they suspected the funding was a done deal -- but they aren't giving up just yet.

Had the $500,00 dollar grant come through, the Blair County Drug Court could have expanded. Adding another branch to the system would have meant addicts would receive help within 10 to 20 days of coming out of the District Justice's office. But without the money things are on hold -- and officials want to know why.

Unfortunately there were more than 350 applicants for the grant money and instead of giving out 100 grants, the federal government only gave out 24. But Judge Kopriva says not all is lost. Even though the grant was substantial, it was only for a three year period. "At the end of that three years, no matter what we had created and how great it was we would've had to pick up the ball and find local funding or some other avenue of funding anyway."
