Blair County Target Of Attempted Scam

We've all grown all too familiar with identity theft warnings, but now it looks like scam artists are taking it to the government level.

Blair County Commissioner Terry Tomassetti showed WJACTV.com the letter addressed to the county's highway department.

The letter was sent in tax form back in January.

The county's Chief Clerk Helen Schmitt spotted the letter. It asked for a "release of county financial information" to the U.S. Department of Transportation.

The letter was from a John Steinberg, Senior Procurement Officer.

When Schmitt went to clarify the fax's origin, she got no response. She then contacted the department head-quartered in Washington, D.C. Officials there told her they'd never heard of Steinberg and the later was a fake.
