BRAC Commission Makes Decision; Jobs To Leave Cambria County

Cambria County —

Those 86 jobs at the Marine Corp. Reserve Center in Richland Township will be moved to New Jersey. This all hinges, however, on the President and Congress approving the recommendation. If that happens, those jobs will be gone. That means a loss of business and families in this area.

200 million dollars is invested in the 10-year-old base at the Johnstown Airport. It's one of a few in Richland Township, but not the end of the Marines in Cambria County.

Major Randy Parker of the U.S. Marine Corp. in Richland Township tells Channel 6 News, "Interesting to note that the other Marine Unit located here will remain here in Johnstown so the community is not going to lose contact with the U.S. Marine Corp."

The Marine Corp. Reserve Center is just one of 13 bases in Pennsylvania the Pentagon is looking at.

The vote Friday by the BRAC Committee also eliminates the aircraft from the Willow Grove Naval Air Station outside Philadelphia. However they are not closing the facility. The BRAC plans to utilize the base for other means. It is unclear what that other use will be. In the meantime, 1,200 jobs hang in the balance. That base represents a quarter of the state's Air National Guard.

There is some good news in all of this. The Pittsburgh International Air Reserve Station will remain open. That station is home to the Air Force's 911th Tactical Airlift group which has recruits and trains Air Force personnel.

Late Friday afternoon, a Federal Judge agreed with Governor Ed Rendell and ruled the Pentagon lacks the authority to deactivate a Pennsylvania Air National Guard Unit.

Congressman John Murtha also released a statement late Friday afternoon expressing his disappointment with BRAC's decision. Congressman Murtha says these troops have everything they need right here in one of the most modern aviation facilities in the country.
