AmeriServ bank robbery suspect arrested

CAMBRIA COUNTY, Pa. —

Police made a big break in a Cambria County bank robbery case Friday. Police arrested the man they said is responsible for holding up the  AmeriServ bank in Lower Yoder Township earlier this month.

Police said it was video surveillance that helped lead them to the suspect. They said the gloves, mask and possibly even the gun used in the robbery were items in the Halloween department at a nearby Dollar General. Police said they have video from that store that shows the suspect, Dion Wilt, stealing the items just hours before the robbery at the AmeriServ bank. Police said it was Wilts' family members and friends who identified him.

Police said Wilt pulled a gun on a teller at the AmeriServ bank in the Westwood Plaza on Sept. 6, getting away with more than $4,000 in cash. According to the criminal complaint, it was Wilts' wife who contacted an assistant district attorney in Cambria County when she thought the pictures on the news looked like her husband.

"The subject was identified from persons that have known him for a considerable period of time," said West Hills regional police detective George Musulin. "They were well aware of his mannerisms, his general demeanor and physical characteristics."

Even though Cambria County Crime Stoppers had increased its reward for information leading to an arrest just days ago, Musulin said no one he's interviewed has asked for the cash.

"I think that the witnesses that came forward and were contacted did it out of what they felt was right," said Musulin.

Police said Wilt is only facing charges for the robbery at the AmeriServ bank. The robberies at Gallos Newstand and the First National Bank in Davidsville are still under investigation.

"I would not wish to comment on Conemaugh Township's investigation," said Musulin. "Although there are some similarities here, I think they are taking the proper course of action at this time."

The criminal complaint said Dion was called to police headquarters last week, where he adamantly denied any involvement. But police said they were able to find the same white gloves and shoes in Wilts' car that were worn during the robbery, as well as the hubcaps he had on his tires to disguise his car. As for the tattoo seen in video surveillance, police said Wilt drew that on with a marker to further conceal his identity.

He was sent to jail Friday with bond set at $350,000.
