Brookville police to patrol all schools in district

By WJAC Web Staff

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Pa. —

The Brookville School District in Jefferson County is the latest in the region to bolster security in its buildings.

Starting this week, a Brookville borough police officer will patrol hallways in the district's four schools.

The decision came out of a meeting that the district had with parents in the wake of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shootings in Connecticut. Brookville parents questioned how safe their children are, which prompted school officials and local police to work out a plan.

"We're trying to do the best we can, and I think this is a very positive reaction," said Brookville superintendent Sandra Craft.

Brookville police Officer Vince Markle said, "We want the kids in the school district to be learning, not worrying about safety. That's our job."

Parents who spoke with 6 News said they like the idea of having a properly trained officer in the schools.
