Bus Crash Wakes Homeowner

By Rich Wisniewski

BIG RUN, Pa —

Big Run resident Jean Fike was napping just around 3 o'clock Friday afternoon at her home on Route 119 (or Main Street) in Big Run, Jefferson County . That's when she heard a noise from outside.

"It was a shock," she remembered.

That shock came when she opened her front door and found that a school bus had crashed into her front porch.

"I knew there was probably children still inside," she said.

And there was, three kids and two adults were on the bus, which was carrying kids from the Punxsutawney Area School District.

Fortunately, no one involved had major injuries. However, to be safe, everyone in the bus was taken to the Punxsutawney Hospital to get checked out.  Fike said she wasn't hurt, but she said she was a little shaken up.

Emergency responders say that the crash was not a result of the bad weather that fell over much of Pennsylvania Friday.

"It is believed to be medical related, the driver may have had a medical issue," said Stan Derise, Fire Cheif for the Big Run Fire Company.

Since the crash, most of the houses around that area had no power. But crews were out there working as soon as possible. The fire chief told six news that power went on shortly after 9pm.

As for the kids on the bus, police say they were treated and released from the hospital.
