Cambria Co. bracing for strong winds, power outages

By Maria Miller

CAMBRIA COUNTY, Pa. —

The effects of Hurricane Sandy are turning into more of a rain event in Cambria County and less of a snow event. The heavy rainfall could cause creeks and rivers to swell but emergency officials said the rain doesn't worry them.

They said the county has been in a bit of a dry spell, the rivers are low and could withstand some water. It's the wind that's causing concern.

"Right now we can probably absorb up to a 5-inch rain fall, without getting into that area of major flooding," said Cambria County Emergency Management Director Ron Springer. "People will have still flooded basements, there will be flooded roadways, areas of poor drainage that will present problems and possible mudslides, but it's not going to be catastrophic."

The real concern is strong winds, something western Pennsylvanians are not used to, especially for a prolonged period of time.

"When we start getting into 40 mph sustained winds over a day period, certainly with the added rainfall and the loosening of trees, power outages are probably going to be our number 1 concern," said Springer.

In anticipation of severe weather, employees of the 911 center in Ebensburg have already been notified that they'll probably be working a little longer the next couple of days.

"Never hesitate to call 911, even if you're unsure," said Springer. "We have non-emergency numbers for 911. They can put you over to one of those numbers to call back. We're here to help."
