EBENSBURG, Pa. —

Authorities say a Cambria County Prison inmate killed his cellmate then tried to make it look like a suicide.

William Amos Cramer, 21, was ordered Monday to stand trial on charges of criminal homicide and aggravated assault in the Aug. 4 death of William Sherry at the prison.

A deputy coroner said Cramer attempted to make it look like Sherry hanged himself. But the coroner said the ruse was immediately clear because Sherry had been bound hand and foot with a torn bed sheet.

Prosecutors said Cramer admitted killing Sherry in a note to another inmate. Investigators allege Cramer, who is white, disliked Sherry because he thought he'd fathered a black child.

Defense attorneys said prison records indicate their cell had been checked on four minutes before Cramer contacted guards.

There had been some questions if Cramer and Sherry should have been placed in the same cell because of their criminal histories.  On Monday, results of an internal review showed the jail did follow proper procedure.

Prosecutors said Cramer could face the death penalty if convicted.  He is currently being held at Rockview State Prison.
