CAMBRIA COUNTY, Pa. —

A Portage man was arrested Thursday night after police said he sexually assaulted and raped a young girl for more than two years. The criminal complaint is disturbing and graphic. Mark Greenawalt is in jail facing five different felony charges including rape, deviate sexual intercourse and sexual assault on the 9-year-old.

"A friend of the mother's approached her and heard from her child and that mother did some inquiring," said Portage Borough Police Chief Edward Miller. "She was able to get an explanation that she did have indecent contact with an adult and she ended up calling us."

Police said they conducted a forensic interview with the girl and found out Greenawalt sexually abused her multiple times over the past 2 1/2 years. Police said the assaults happened most often in Greenawalt's garage.

"The two families are friends and the mother had gone out and he would be babysitting," said Miller.

"I was looking out the window and the cops pulled up," said Katrina Conrad who lives next door. "They patted Mark down and arrested him."

Conrad said her children usually play just feet away from Greenawalt's garage. She didn't know why he was arrested.

"He was always weird," she said. "He would always come up and if I had the kids outside he would always come up and kiss them on the head for no reason."

Conrad's sister and brother in-law share her concerns, but said they never expected news like this.

"He just seemed like an overall average guy," said Conrad's brother in-law Joe Kukla. "I mean it's a real shock to find out what happened."

"I don't like the fact that he's that close and that we have the association with him," said Kira Kukla.

Police said they have no evidence to believe there are any other victims but they were supposed to conduct a search warrant at Greenawalt's home Friday afternoon.

Greenawalt remained in jail Friday evening on $50,000 bond.
