Cambria County Corrections Officer Recovering After Hostage Situation

Related

An official said the corrections officer taken hostage at the Cambria County prison is recovering and doing well.

Cambria County prison warden John Prebish said counselors were at the prison Tuesday speaking with inmates and guards who witnessed the incident.

Friday night, officer Ross Morelli was taken hostage my inmate Torone Dixon. Dixon was shot and killed during that incident.

Prebish said some of the prisoners are still shaken up about the hostage situation, but said they are more willing to talk about it now than when it happened.

He also said the situation was very stressful on prison employees, especially those who witnessed Dixon beating Morelli. He said their first reaction was to run in and help free Morelli from Dixon, but they weren't permitted to do so.

The Critical Incident and Stress Management team was counseling both inmates and guards.

Prebish said several of the prison units have been released from lockdown and are back to normal activity, but the unit where Morelli was taken hostage has not.

He said Dixon was being held in a high-security section of the prison and everyone must be de-briefed and counseled before the unit is cleared to reopen.
