Cambria County Heart Walk

Story Of Survival

Cambria County —

Nathan Askey is three years old, happy and healthy, but life hasn't been easy for this little guy.

Lisa Askey, Nathan's mother, says, "He had his first heart surgery when he was 11 days old. He weighed six pounds. They took the artery out of his left arm and put it in his aorta."

Just months later Nathan was diagnosed with Double Outlet Right Ventricle, or D.O.R.V, an abnormality in a ventricle in the heart. At five and a half months, he had his first open heart surgery, and at one and a half, his second. Nathan's mother says only two things kept her going.

"One is knowing without a doubt that God was there, guiding the surgeon with my baby. And the other was the cardiologist told us technology had advanced so much in the past 10 years they felt certain Nathan could be fixed," Askey says.

That technology was made possible by funds raised by events like the upcoming Cambria County Heart Walk. It's one day and only a couple miles; just a few steps to save a life. If you still aren't sure if you'll participate in the heart walk, maybe Nathan himself can give you a reason why.

"To fix their broken hearts," says Nathan.

The Cambria County Heart Walk is Sunday September 18th. Registration is at 11:30 A.M. at Roxbury Park in Johnstown. For registration information, call the Johnstown American Heart Association at 266-8905.
