Cambria County prepares for Election Day

By Maria Miller

CAMBRIA COUNTY, Pa. —

The presidential election is one that takes months and months of preparations for elections officials in each individual county and with less than 24 hours to go before the polls open many offices are working up until the very last minute.

The Cambria County election office sai it's ready and expecting a big turnout at the polls on Tuesday.

"There's a lot of prep work putting an election together especially a federal election for president," said Shirley Crowl, director of elections for Cambria County. "We've been extremely busy."

For the past year the elections office has been gearing up for Nov. 6, making sure things go as smooth as possible.

"We have four to five for each precinct and we have 165 precincts," said Crowl. "We have full staff all through day and night so we have a lot of people who contribute to pulling this together."

With just hours to go until the polls open, the office said they've also been busy answering phone calls.

"We're dealing with a lot of last-minute questions," said Crowl. "People are calling to see if they're registered and where they do vote."

Others were asking about the controversial voter ID law.

"They will be asked, but they are not required," said Crowl. "But if you are a new voter or a new voter in a new precinct, that law has not changed and you still need to show ID if you are a new voter."

They're all good questions the office doesn't mind answering, in fact they said they appreciate the calls and hope it's a sign of a good turnout for Tuesday.

"There will be lines and we're hoping that the voters will just be patient because it is going to take a while to get through some of the lines," said Crowl. "The poll workers are going to be working as diligently as they can to make sure everyone has their opportunity to vote."

The polls will open at 7 a.m. Tuesday and close at 8p.m.

Cambria county has posted sample ballots for each municipality online as well as a refresher on how to use the electronic voting machines. http://www.co.cambria.pa.us/election-and-voter-registration.aspx
