Cambria County —

Channel 6 News spent Monday at Central Cambria High School. Students and staff are grief stricken. Three of their friends are hurt while the new kid, who they took under their wing, is gone.

18-year-old Amanda Ickes transferred to Central Cambria last year from Claysburg, according to her principal. Knowing no one, she quickly fit in, playing clarinet in the marching band. Though she was shy, she put a smile on students' faces.

Police say she rounded a curve on Colver Road Friday night. She lost control and slammed into a tree. She died at the hospital. Her passenger, a young man and senior at Central Cambria, was hurt. The school was told there were no drugs or alcohol involved and both students were wearing seat belts.

School officials decided to keep school open Monday. Grief counselors are helping dozens of saddened students. They've remembered her with a rose on her empty desk and their goodbyes.

Susan Dixon was Amanda's counselor. She tells Channel 6 News, "Her band instructor shared with me that she had the students write a reflective piece after the winter concert that occurred in December. Amanda emphasized how much she appreciated the kindness of the students here because she was new."

Ken Bussard is the Principal at Central Cambria High School. He says, "We're going to be taking a bus down this evening to the viewing. Some of her closest friends will probably be attending the service tomorrow."

Students are also crossing their fingers for two other classmates. Another car accident on Saturday night hurt yet another Central Cambria student. The school says it happened in Jackson Township. School officials are not releasing the identity of the student.

Police say 16-year-old Derek Kovach was shot during his party late Saturday night in Jackson Township. Police arrested 22-year-old Benjamin Rapisarda of New York City. Police say he was displaying a gun when it went off hitting Kovach.
