Cambria County To Raise Property Taxes

Cambria County residents can expect higher taxes in 2009, the county commissioners said Tuesday.

The $176 million county spending plan will raise property taxes by 15 percent. The average homeowner will pay about $43 more next year, officials said.

Commissioner P.J. Stevens said he knows the decision is not popular but said he can’t be concerned about winning a popularity contest.

Each county department was asked to cut spending, but Stevens said the county is still in a tight spot.

In addition, the county laid off a sheriff’s deputy, among other employees. The sheriff is now threatening a lawsuit over the layoffs.
