CamTran: Seniors should not be worried with transportation change

By Maria Miller

CAMBRIA COUNTY, Pa. —

Cambria County seniors told 6 News Thursday they're worried that county leaders could choose to close more centers in the future. But they have another worry.

Seniors who use those centers often rely on the Area Agency on Aging to get there. And in just a few months that transportation will be replaced with CamTran.

Seniors said they're afraid it's going to be harder to book a ride and that CamTran will only travel to certain areas. But CamTran said the only thing really changing will be the name and color of the buses.

"The seniors shouldn't be concerned," said Rose Lucey-Knoll, executive director for CamTran. "There's bus service still going to be there."

Starting June 30, the Cambria County Area Agency on Aging will no longer be transporting seniors. CamTran is taking over, in what county leaders call a cost-cutting measure.

That means agency drivers will be out of a job.

"Hearing these van drivers are being laid off breaks my heart. There are people alive today because of their caring and concern," said Kathryn Hershel, Portage senior. "They were allowed to go call 911, stay with them and all that, which, I don't know if that's going to be allowed now."

CamTran admits drivers won't be allowed to go inside a home but said they'll still be able to help seniors onto the bus.

"We don't go inside the house but we certainly have a door-to-door service," said Lucey-Knoll.

Officials said the only real change seniors will see is the color of the bus. They'll no longer be riding on white AAA buses but rather CamTrans blue and yellow Reserve A Ride buses, a service that's been around for years.

"The whole idea of that was to coordinate our services so we could operate more efficiently and effectively," said Lucey-Knoll. "So we wouldn't have buses following buses.

CamTran said as long as it's notified 24 hours in advance, drivers will go anywhere in the county to give a senior a ride.

"It's exactly the same as it is now. Nothing will change from that point of view," said Lucey-Knoll. "A lot of the seniors book their trips at the senior center and then the senior center directors send the reservations to us and we put the rides together then."

As for the agency drivers who are losing their jobs, Lucey-Knoll said CamTran has already decided that those drivers will have top priority for any job openings.
