Catholic Diocese Freezes Wages; Cites Decreasing Donations

Citing a significant drop in donations, the Altoona-Johnston Catholic Diocese is implementing a wage freeze for the bishop, all clergy and lay staff.

Officials with the diocese said they closely examined their finances and determined a wage freeze for 2009 would help make it through the fiscal year.

Monsignor George Flinn, of the diocese, said those who are affected already expected the wage freeze. He said low donations are a direct result of the crumbling economy. Because more parishioners have lost their jobs, they're simply not giving to the church.

The diocese has also seen a drop in church membership, which affects donations.

"We're not moving in a good direction right now. We are hoping for the best, we are praying for the best. If the Lord has something in mind, then we know things will work. But, it's a challenge," Flinn said.

Flinn said the diocese is also asking local parishes to ask their finance council to follow with wage freezes. He said the church depends on donations for not only parish work, but also for different ministries in the diocese.
