Catholic Schools Unite

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. —

All five of the Catholic schools in Johnstown are working together on everything from curriculum to marketing in order to help boost enrollment and to become financially independent.

After the closing of West End Catholic and St. Patrick's School, leaders realize that all of the schools that are still open need to work together to remain open.

"All of the different things that we normally work on on our own we want to work together to become efficient so we can expand our reach," said Ken Salem, principal of Bishop McCort.

Administrators tell WJAC-TV that around 90 percent of the students who attend Catholic elementary schools in Johnstown will continue their education at Bishop McCort so increasing enrollment at a young age is key.

"We have an excellent foundation here in the elementary years and we get them prepared to move on to Bishop McCort High School with that firm educational foundation," said Pam Seidel, principal of Our Mother of Sorrows.

A proposed bill in Harrisburg could help Catholic school enrollment. If the bill passes, vouchers for private schools would be given to low-income parents. This would give them a choice of sending their kids to private or public schools an option they might not have been able to afford without the voucher.
