Central City Fire Donations Letter Causes Stir

SHADE TOWNSHIP, Pa. —

Residents of Shade Township received letters this week from the Central City Fire Department asking for donations.

In January Central City Fire Department wanted to continue quick-response medical service at no cost to the township, and township supervisors agreed to it.

Some residents were outraged, because a few months ago Central City fire officials ceased fire service to the township but continued quick-response service. The cease of fire service came after Shade Township supervisors and Central City fire officials couldn't agree on a financial contract.

Now residents are confused as to why they have to donate to the Fire Department. Central City Fire crews said they want support for their medical service because over the past year their emergency medical technicians have responded to around 200 calls.

Shade Township supervisor John Topka said this letter caught the township off-guard. Topka said the letter is misleading for their residents, so they sent it to their lawyers.

Right now Shade Township and Richland Township Fire Department have a contract to provide fire service, as well as ambulance service. Central City Fire Department will only provide quick-response service for medical emergencies.

A township resident said even though Central City Fire Department is no longer responding to fires in her area, she still plans to donate because they're part of the community.
