The National Weather Service has issued severe weather alerts for much of the 6 News viewing area.

A winter weather advisory is in effect for Cambria, Indiana, Jefferson and Somerset counties.

The NWS said a winter weather advisory for snow means that periods of snow will cause travel difficulties. Drivers should be prepared for snow-covered roads and limited visibilities and use caution while driving. Motorists should be especially cautious on bridges and overpasses where slippery spots develop first.

Severe Weather Team 6 meteorologists said a winter storm will cross the state, spreading snow into the area around midday. Snow is expected to become steady and even heavy at times through Friday night.

Meteorologist Jim Burton said to expect travel conditions to deteriorate later Friday as the snow begins to accumulate. High temperatures on Friday are expected to be in the mid-to-upper teens and hit single-digit lows Friday night.

A steady snow is expected to taper to snow showers on Saturday and intermittent snow showers will diminish toward evening, Burton said.

A total of 3-5 inches of snow is likely for much of the area. However, higher amounts will accumulate on the western slopes of the Laurel Highlands, Burton said.
