Centre County Headlines

Work on a new Centre County Prison is officially underway. Groundbreaking ceremonies were held this morning at the new prison site off of Route 150 in Benner Township. The 20 million dollar construction project is expected to be wrapped within two years. Overcrowding at the current jail is so bad, that on most days anywhere from 75 to 100 inmates are housed in prisons elsewhere.

Jurors in the trial for Penn State football player Anwar Phillips wont hear any testimony about the disciplinary action the University took. Judge David Grine agreed with a prosecution request that the University sanctions against Phillips wont be part of the trial. The prosecution feels it could confuse jurors, and Phillips attorney says he has no problem with the ruling. Phillips is accused of sexually assaulting a woman on campus last year. The trial is et to begin next Monday.
