Centre County New Year's Eve Celebration Taking Shape

STATE COLLEGE —

Organizers said preparations for the annual New Year's Eve celebration in Centre County are on schedule. Lights that decorate the Central Parklet in State College for the First Night festivities went up Thursday.

There are to be performances and a number of vendors in the parklet and the event also features exhibits and activities that people can take part in to ring in the new year, including ice sculptures. Organizers said there is a sculpture this year that is sure to impress everyone.

"The sculpture that we are really excited about is that they are doing a full-size version of George Washington crossing the Delaware River," said Rick Bryant, executive director of the celebration. "So, that happened in 1776 and we are in an anniversary year and there is a resurgence of interest in George Washington because they have done sort of a CSI thing to figure out what he really looked like and so we thought this would be a great sculpture."
