Centre County Reacts to Governor's Lawsuit Against NCAA

By Stef Davis

STATE COLLEGE, Pa

State College is buzzing with news of Governor's Corbett’s intent to sue the NCAA and abolish the sanctions levied against Penn State.

Thad Kosciolek, Penn State student, says, “I think most people naturally, as most of us here at Penn State were, upset about what Jerry Sandusky did, but when the sanctions came down, I think most people were level-headed about. They had nothing to do with the football team. His crimes should no way affect the rest of us."

But many people in Centre County say the sanctions did affect the rest of them--having an economic impact on State College as a whole.

Chris Exarchos, Centre County Commissioner, says, "It’s the hotels, the restaurants, the gift shops, everything that goes along with Penn State football if the attendance is low. And if we can't recruit, we may lose the quality of the football program.”

Local business leaders say they are keeping a close eye on the economic trends since the sanctions came down.

Vern Squier, Centre County Chamber of Commerce, says, "It’s the reactionary measures that have our businesses on pins and needles. They are trying to position themselves, but they are doing their best.”
