It happened Friday night around 10 a.m. in front of the Philipsburg Towers on Front Street.
Police said a person wearing dark clothing attacked the 82-year-old man and tried to steal his wallet.
A chain securing the wallet held and the man was able to get inside.
Police ask anyone with details on the case to call the state police in Philipsburg at (814) 342-3370.
