Centre County Unveils Budget; Second Mile Funding Returned To State

By Gary Sinderson

BELLEFONTE, Pa. —

Commissioners in Centre County released their $80 million budget plan for 2012 on Tuesday, confirming that residents will not see a tax hike or job cuts.

County administrator Denise Elbell said the reserve fund currently exceeds $9 million.

“It’s going to be up right now, at the end of last year, we were at $8.3 million and we’re looking to add another $1.3 million to the reserve,” said Elbell.

Officials said the Second Mile charity decided not to use $3 million in state funding earmarked for it’s learning center project.

Centre County Commissioner Rich Rogers told 6News he’s hopeful that the funding, which must be returned to the state, will be reallocated for the county’s 911 upgrade project.

“We’re going to try and keep the money in Centre County. It’s important, but it’s got to be for a qualifying project,” said Rogers.
