Chaneysville Elementary Remains Open

Classes resumed Tuesday at a Bedford County elementary school administrators had tried to close but persistent parents and a court order stopped.

Many of the 60 Chaneysville-Cove Elementary students and their parents said they were thrilled to be back at the school for another year.

The Everett School Board voted last Thursday to abide by a judge's ruling to keep the school open. The judge said his ruling was based on some safety concerns, something staff said is always their first priority.

"We just have to wait and see what's going to go on, we're just going to do our best for the school year," said Principal Shawn Kovac. "Our first priority is the kids and that's what we're going to work on."

Even thought the district rushed to hire several teachers and prepare the school for classes, Kovac said "the building is ready to open, the floors are shiny, everything is clean and our books and our curriculum is ready to go. All of our teachers are in place, our bulletin boards are up. We're ready to go. The kids are excited, we're excited."
