Changes For Penelec

Cambria County —

A few months ago, a burning candle caused a fire that killed four people in Hastings, Cambria County. That family's electric had been shut off, because the family had trouble paying their electric bill. If you know how that feels, pay attention, because there is help for you.

A spokesperson for First Energy, the parent company of Penelec, says "We're going back to make sure that Customer Service Representatives find out if customers have been referred to Customer Assistance Programs. The company will work with the Public Utility Commission to ensure consistency."

So, how can you keep your power on? Tell your utility company about any problems you have. Mention any medical condition or income problems. Ask about payment arrangements or the Customer Assistance Programs. If the company offers you no help, call the Public Utility Commission. The number for their termination line is 1-800-692-7380.

The State Public Utility Commission hit Penelec with a $250,000 fine for the role it played in that deadly Cambria County house fire.
