Chesapeake Bay Watershed Seminar

You could be stuck paying to help clean the Chesapeake Bay. Experts say pollutants, including sewage, from our area are making their way from the Susquehanna and into the bay. Everything we throw down any stream this side of the Allegheny Plateau ends up in the Chesapeake Bay and that has a huge effect on the quality of the water and aquatic life. What that means for you and me, is if you like to go to Red Lobster and eat oysters or crab, well, who knows how much longer you'll be able to do that. Here's the problem. Various pollutants from nitrates to phosphorous have been killing fish for years. That's why a number of years ago, the Chesapeake Bay Watershed Foundation was born. Their mission is to clean the watershed up, along with all the tributaries. The leading culprit is agriculture run off, meaning cow manure, in fact 85 percent of the pollution comes from that. But the other 15 comes from people, i.e. sewage. D-E-P is requiring individual homes and municipalities to put in nitrate filters. The question is who should foot the bill?

Hollidaysburg Borough Manager, Diane Melling says, "We want to do our part but on the other hand, we would hope to get some assistance from the state to carry through the goals they have established. The Chesapeake Bay might seem far away, but our state actually contributes 50 percent of the Bay's fresh water."
