Chocolates That Can Help You Avoid Diet Disaster

Women and chocolate seem to be a natural combination. So how can you get your chocolate fix without piling up the calories? Good Housekeeping has some advice that can satisfy your craving while avoiding a diet disaster.

"Fifty-two percent of women say they eat chocolate every day, so Good Housekeeping went out to find some better-for-you chocolate options, like Luna Minis," said Samantha Cassetty, M.S., R.D., nutrition director, Good Housekeeping Institute. "The Luna Minis are less than half the size of the regular Luna bar, and they're even smaller than some chocolate bars."

And Good Housekeeping says for a grown-up twist on chocolate-covered raisins, try Kopali Organic Dark Chocolate Covered Goji Berries. "Each one of these berries is chocolate covered and is just four calories, so you can eat half the package for just 120 calories. Just be sure not to eat the whole thing," Cassetty said.

Dark chocolate contains cocoa flavanols, and these protective substances can help slow the mental decline that happens when you age, according to Cassetty. "So the rule of thumb is to look for the darkest chocolate you would enjoy."

Don’t get too carried away about the health benefits of chocolate, though. Chocolate is a fairly high fat food. To learn more, check out the December issue of Good Housekeeping or visit www.goodhousekeeping.com.
