Church fully paid for thanks to generous donations from community

By Brittany Boyer

LUTHERSBURG, Pa. —

A church in Clearfield County said Christmas came early this year.

In April 2011, the Salem United Methodist Church was badly damaged after a log truck lost control causing the truck to hit the church which is located along Route 322 in Brady Township.

Officials said most of the logs flew off the truck, hitting the church and causing problems to the churches foundation.

Following the accident services could no longer be held inside the church.

Members of the congregation were left attending services at other nearby churches.

In 2012, the church decided that it was time to tear down the church and rebuild.

Dave Radaker, one of the members of the church told 6 News that in order to build a new church it would cost $615,000.

Members of the congregation reached out to the community for help.  Several fundraisers and spaghetti benefits were held to help defray the cost.

A week before Christmas, Radaker told 6 News the community's response has been overwhelming.

The church is paid off.

"Through a lot of people we've come a long way in a short period of time.  To this day we did not have to take a mortgage out on our church.  It's completely paid for," he said.

Radaker said he and other members had no idea they would get this response.

He said they are grateful for the tremendous support of the community.
