City Officials Prepare For Garage Demolition

One day after the collapse of Johnstown’s Washington Street garage, city officials are scrambling to map out the next step: demolition.

But that move means one more big hit to the city’s budget, and members of the City Council said this could not have come at a worse time.

Officials said that because they aren’t going to raise taxes to cover the cost of the demolition, more job cuts could be on the way.

On Tuesday, city officials met with engineers and determined the building would have to come down. By that afternoon, they sent out requests to demolition contractors. City Manager Curt Dais said bids are coming in at around $100,000.00 and that the demolition could start as early as Monday.

The demolition itself could take about two weeks to complete. The roads around the building and nearby businesses will be closed until it’s finished.

While they plan to salvage some of the steel from inside the garage, the expense will be a glitch on the city’s preliminary budget that passed this week.
