Clearfield Area School District Adopts Budget

Clearfield County —

The corners have been cut and the juggling is over. The Clearfield Area School District has a 2005-2006 budget. The board adopted the budget, which was several weeks in the making. The struggle to come up with a balance came after a $3-million dollar deficit was recognized. To deal with the shortcoming, 15 teachers were furloughed, and over 40 supplemental and extra-duty positions were cut. The board tried eliminating full-time jobs in the custodial and cleaning staff, but that motion died at last week's meeting in a 5-to-3 vote. The 9-mill tax hike means that the owner of a home valued at $50,000 dollars will pay an additional $112 next year in school taxes. District Superintendent Dr. Denise Keltz is satisfied with the budget, and says they've done all they can to trim expenditures without sacrificing the quality of learning in the district.
