Clearfield Co. prepares as Hurricane Sandy brings heavy rain, gusty winds

By Brittany Boyer

CLEARFIELD COUNTY, Pa. —

Hurricane Sandy will go down in the books for many living in the northeast.

In Western Pennsylvania, this is the first time many have had a day off because of a hurricane.

Several schools in Clearfield County canceled classes Monday in anticipation of the storm.

"It's nice to have it rain every once and a while but we're out of school, what can I say it's obviously nice," said DuBois Area High School junior, Chris Thomanson.

Clearfield Area School District superintendent, Dr.Thomas Otto told 6 News he canceled classes and activities at the district due to the forecast.

Otto said that the main priority at the district is to assure its students and faculty members are safe.

6 News stopped by Giant Eagle in DuBois.  Dozens of people were running into the grocery store to get last minute items.

Residents said batteries, water and filling prescriptions was their main priority.

By Monday afternoon a number of schools in our viewing area already canceled classes for Tuesday.

Thomason said he doesn't mind the days off of school.

"A day off unexpectedly is nice every once and a while. I don't mind it. It doesn't really get old," Thomason said.
