Clearfield United Way Kicks Off Fundraising Campaign

CLEARFIELD, Pa. —

It's the ground zero for unemployment across the Alleghenies.

Many counties in the northern Alleghenies have unemployment rates into the double digits.

But officials said the high unemployment rates have not affected charitable giving.

The Clearfield Area United Way kicked off its fundraising season on Thursday.

Officials said because of the recession, demand for their services is high.

They added that the economic downturn has affected everyone.

New statistics from the Pennsylvania Department of Labor & Industry show some surprising aspects of people looking for jobs.

Around eight in ten job seekers have a high school diploma. Half those looking for jobs are between 25 and 54 years old.

But even with the high unemployment, Clearfield Area United Way officials have always reached their fundraising goals. They're planning several fundraisers this year, including dress down days at local businesses and a basket raffle.
