Clearville Students Bussed One Hour To Get To New School

Because the state ordered their school to be closed, 50 students in the Everett Area School District are being bussed an hour away to get to a different school.

The kindergarten through fifth-grade students, all from Clearville, previously attended Chaneysville-Cove Elementary and are now being sent to Everett Elementary.

School officials said Chaneysville-Cove's closure will save the school district hundreds of thousands of dollars a year.

The students' new bus route goes around Tussey Mountain, which many parents consider a dangerous drive and have been fighting for weeks to put a stop to it. Parents had said when bad weather arrives, there is a potential for disaster.

Debbie Rice decided to home school her 5-year-old daughter instead of sending her on the bus.

"In the winter time it's going to be a little longer because the roads on Black Valley are very, very narrow and windy. It's going to be a challenge," said Rice.

The school board agreed to revisit the bus route again sometime next month. Stay with WJAC-TV News and WJACTV.com for continuing coverage.
