PITTSBURGH, PA —
A TECHNICAL REPORT MORE THAN A DECADE AGO BY SCIENTISTS IN PITTSBURGH COULD HAVE SERVED AS A WARNING ABOUT THE SHUTTLE COLUMBIA TRAGEDY.
EXPERTS AT CARNEGIE MELLON UNIVERSITY TOLD NASA IN 1990 THAT THE SHUTTLE COULD BE LOST IF TILES ON THE UNDERSIDE OF THE ORBITER'S WINGS WERE DAMAGED DURING LIFTOFF.
NASA OFFICIALS NOW SUSPECT THAT DAMAGED TILES MAY HAVE CAUSED COLUMBIA TO BREAK UP ON RE-ENTRY SATURDAY. CARNEGIE MELLON PROFESSORS ISSUED A FOLLOW UP ANALYSIS ON THE PROBLEM IN 1994.
