Commissioner wants to create foreign trade zone at Johnstown airport

By Kerri Corrado

EBENSBURG, Pa. —

President Commissioner Doug Lengenfelder returned back to Johnstown after a business trip to Argentina.

"We went to Argentina to develop those relationships. With those businesses means businesses coming to Cambria County,” Lengenfelder said.

The Cambria county commissioners say job creation is their main goal, but  Lengenfelder says he believes a foreign trade zone is key in helping the Johnstown economy.

Lengenfelder says he went to Argentina with other officials to discuss wine business opportunities. He wants to bring wine to our region through a foreign trade zone at the Johnstown airport.

He says he has political backing from Senator Toomey and Congressmen Shuster and Rothfus. The airport authority oversees the operation at the airport, but Lengenfelder says he wants to make a new advisory board to oversee the trade zone.

"We were intentionally planning to have the airport authority lead in the development for foreign trade zone with the legislative changes made last year... its not apparent that it would be more beneficial to the airport and the county,” Lengenfelder said.

Some question the need to change the airport make-up and operation. Johnstown businessman Mark Pasquerilla says the airport authority has good leadership and does not want to see another board created.

"I am all for jobs. I just think it is hard to get economic development projects when running things in a very untransparent environment,” Pasquerilla said.

Lengenfelder says he plans more meetings and discussions before moving the idea of a foreign trade zone forward. Many are worried this idea is happening to fast and some say it is wasting taxpayers money. About 150,000 dollars was allocated to economical development to be utilized by the airport.
