Commissioners: Cambria Co.'s Wi-Fi Program Huge Success

Related

It's been nearly three years since Cambria County launched its wireless Internet program, Cambria Connected, which brings high-speed broadband to homes and businesses that may not have had any Internet access at all. Friday, commissioners said they've seen the technology reach a whole new level.

When it launched, commissioners said they had to convince people just to log on because there were many naysayers and people who said it just wouldn't work. While it got off to a slow start, commissioners are not only boasting its success, but said it was the best thing they could have done for the county.

Commissioner said Cambria Connected serves as a model for counties across the state along with home and businesses now wired. In addition, emergency responders' vehicles are equipped with high-tech radios that have Wi-Fi access through the system, helping to keep residents safe.

Cambria Connected is also becoming more important for the growing Marcellus Shale industry in Cambria County. Drilling companies are taking advantage of it so they can retrieve data and provide security for well sites. Because of the reasonable cost, it's helping the drilling companies' bottom line, so they'll be able to pay higher royalties to Cambria County landowners.

Commissioner P.J. Stevens said the capabilities of Cambria Connected will bring revenue, save money and create jobs.

"It's just beginning to reach its stride in full potential," Stevens said.

Rumors have been swirling that county commissioners plan to sell Cambria Connected, but Stevens said that's absolutely not true.
