Commissioners Travel To Nation's Capitol In Support Of Route 219 Project

SOMERSET, Pa. —

Somerset County commissioners are trying to find a way to get the funds needed for construction on the ongoing 219 project.

The state has withdrawn the funds needed to complete the portion of the project from Somerset to Meyersdale.

Gov. Ed Rendell said the focus for the state needs to be put into repairing deficient bridges, not funding new roadways.

Thursday, the Somerset County Commissioners are traveling to Washington, D.C., to discuss the financial problem with U.S. Rep. John Murtha and other state leaders.

Commissioner John Vadavuk said they are also working with lobbyists to try to generate support for the project in Washington.

In order to move ahead with construction in 2009, $9 million in additional funds is required.

Somerset County officials said the completion of the road from Somerset to Meyersdale is a critical project to grow the economy in Somerset County.
