Community Bands Together To Build Home For Cambria County Family

They’ve been waiting for months, but this weekend a Cambria County family will finally move into its new home thanks to a local charity and more than $20,000 in community donations.

Donna Sliko and her 15-year old autistic twins, Danielle and Donelle, outgrew their apartment in St. Michael last year, but Habitat For Humanity came to the rescue just in time.

While there were a few setbacks because of the weather, Sliko said it was worth the wait.

"A dream come true. ...I can't thank everyone enough for what they've done for me and the twins," Sliko said.

Mary McNamara, of Habitat For Humanity, said this home had an added bonus.

"It's very difficult to get the children in the car, so we added a garage. Normally, we don't have garages in our Habitat homes, so that was a special feature," McNamara said.

Because of the girls' disabilities, the home was also equipped with many extra features that were all donated , including a monitoring system with three cameras installed by students from UPI.

Habitat officials said they received more donations and support from the community than any other home they've built, allowing them to make the home the perfect fit.

As for the girls, Sliko said, "they really don't understand they're moving into a new home, but they'll get it this Saturday when we move in."

The family is hosting an open house this Saturday for everyone who pitched in to see how their hard work paid off.

"I don't know who's more exited -- her or me," said McNamara. "I'm very excited about her getting this home."
