Community helps family rebuild house damaged in fire

By Kerri Corrado

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. —

“This is better than winning the lottery,” Amanda Everett said.

Amanda Everett was speechless at the overwhelming support from volunteers who helped rebuild her house in the Moxham section of Johnstown. Her house caught fire in early February.

Johnstown fire fighters responded to the blaze quickly saving the structure, but the inside was nearly destroyed.

“It’s impossible for someone to recover from this without the help of the community,” Servpro Owner Jef Kuncelman said

This is where Servpro comes in, a fire and water cleanup franchise in Ebensburg. Amanda called them for help.

“He looked at it and said it was going to cost more than what we paid for the house,” Everett said.

Little did she know what Servpro was planning on doing to her house.

“After hearing about the details, we determined that she didn’t have insurance coverage, so this would be all charity,” Servpro Owner Ben Weaver said.

The company decided to help the family get back on their feet with the help of Lowes, Sherman Williams, and many other businesses who offered supplies to help fix the damage.

“We had so many volunteers to where we had to turn people away and tell them we did not have enough room to let people in,” Kuncelman said.

The family said it was incredible that people dedicated their time to help them.
