Community Reacts To Massive Layoff Announcement

HUNTINGDON, Pa. —

According to AGY corporate officials, 182 employees are being laid off from the aerospace and defense parts producer in Huntingdon.

The staff reduction comes just months after 80 workers were trimmed from the payroll.

Jeff Wertz, an employee with AGY for nearly 31 years, told WJAC-TV that the impact will be felt beyond workers and their families.

“These people buy a lot of stuff in all the stores, businesses, food and what not,” said Wertz. “My god, it's going to be a real kickback for everybody. Everybody’s going to feel it, not just us.”

Huntingdon County Business and Industry executive director Nick Felice said the loss of jobs is no surprise to local entrepreneurs.

“Those are very well paying jobs in a community such as this,” said Felice. “It's a very significant hit.”

The 182 affected employees are expected to be let go by the end of July.
