Community seeking help for fire victims

By Kerri Corrado

JOHNSTOWN, PA. —

“And he went running and I went running through work saying my house is on fire and I came to find the house going up in fames,” Shannon Mahalko said.

The Mahalko’s los their home along Iron Street n West Taylor Township Tuesday.

They went back to the site, looking for belongings left behind. They found a jewelry box filled with jewelry from their first Christmas with each other.

This isn’t the first fire locally in recent days.

“I have only been here for a few years and it blows my mind that there are other people ho lost homes and if I could help them, I would. I have nothing to help them with,” Mahalko said.

Bonnie Foust, from Second Chance Fire Recovery, a organization dedicated to helping fire victims recover. Once there is a fire, she uses Facebook to find the victims.

“But yea we just get on the computer and we contact everyone we know trying to find the things people need,” Foust said.

From then on, she is committed to helping them, urging others to donate.
