Complaint Filed Over Cambria County Recreation Center Use

A complaint was filed with the Cambria Township Zoning Board over a rock and roll concert, but county commissioners said it was only music.

When the recreation center in Cambria Township was built three years ago, county commissioners enacted rules as to how the center would be used, but current county commissioners said times have changed.

The complaints started in November after a concert by the group Buckcherry. A local resident complained and records were found concerning a meeting in which former commissioner president Fred Soisson agreed the facility would not be used for concerts, tractor pulls and other events already held at the war memorial. The minutes also showed the recreation center had to be used for non-profit recreational activities. Channel 6 News spoke with current Commissioner President P.J. Stevens. He said music for young people is as much recreation as basketball.

Stevens said, “I took it upon myself to take a ride up. Everyone was enjoying themselves and the music was no louder than someone playing the radio in the car next to yours. Everyone was behaving themselves and the event was well-received.”

While the concert made money, it was not enough for a profit. Instead, the concert broke even with the cost of putting it on. Stevens admitted he was surprised by the complaint and the issue has been handed over to their solicitor.
