Consignment shop closes, donates final sales earnings to local humane society

By Brittany Boyer

PUNXSUTAWNEY, Pa. —

It has been about a year since Richards Expressive Styles in Punxsutawney opened its doors.

Michelle Richards and her daughter Sami decided the area needed a place for people to buy affordable name brand clothing.

"We stayed with the name brand clothes because in the high schools the bullying is horrible, so we figured if we could do something for the people that couldn't afford the name brands in the malls it would kind of help possibly with the kids that couldn't afford it," Michelle Richards said.

Michelle's daughter Sami previously attended school in Punxsutawney. She said a lot of times kids were bullied if they could not afford name brand clothes.

"I told her if we do the name brand consignment then people who don't have the money to go out to American Eagle or Aeropostale and buy them outright, we have lower prices here," Sami Richards said.

Richards Expressive has decided to close its doors because Sami's daughter may have an autoimmune disease.  With doctors appointments becoming more frequent they have decided to close the shop.

While the shop did close on Thursday -- they didn't do so without helping out a local organization first.

On Thursday the store had a bag sale.  For five dollars shoppers could fill a bag with anything they want and as much as they want.

The store will donate that money to the Gateway Humane Society in Falls Creek.

The Gateway Humane Society is a "no-kill" animal shelter that currently is over capacity.

"It was just something that we could pass on with the donations that people gave us," Michelle Richards said.

"It's always good to help others. I've always tried my best to help others," Sami Richards said.

The sale was held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Thursday.

Michelle Richards told 6 News that they were able to raise $335 dollars.

Both Michelle and Sami said they are excited to help out an organization that is in need.

The clothes that were not sold on Thursday will be donated to a local church that will distribute the clothing during an annual clothing drive.
