Construction underway for multi-million dollar center for arts and technology

By Brittany Boyer

BROCKWAY, Pa. —

A multi-million dollar project is currently underway at the former Brockway Glass headquarters in Jefferson County.

The Brockway Center for Arts and Technology has been under construction for several months.

The project, which is headed by Senator Joe Scarnati is expected to be complete by January 2013.

"You know you have to keep in mind that there is not a community college north of Interstate 80.  We have very good institutions of higher education.  Pitt campuses, Penn State campuses, our state system.  But clearly, affordability and accessibility is an issue for rural Pennsylvania," he said.

Scarnati told 6 News a center like this has been needed in this area for several years.

"A center like this again is a blessing to the community because it is about jobs. Not every graduate wants to go to college, they may not want to go away to an expensive school that really puts families at a real disadvantage in rural Pennsylvania," he said.

The facility will also be used by Butler Community College and Manchester Bidwell Corporation.

Initially, the center will offer medical billing & coding and pharmacy technician programs.

"It gives kids a real chance now to have a family sustaining job  and we're going to have good things happening out of this," Scarnati said.
